To Klout or Not to Klout?

If you’re big on social media, you know that being influential is the key to being successful. And if you care about being influential, you’re probably using Klout, the most popular platform for measuring social influence. And if you use Klout, you’re probably aware of the controversy surrounding it. The thing about Klout is that you either truly believe in the power of it or you think it is a complete farce.

Your Klout score is calculated using a very specific algorithm to determine your score. It’s biggest factors include:

  • How many people you influence;
  • How much you influence them; and
  • How influential they are.

Basically, connect with influential people, and increase your own influence. Makes sense, right?

Not to everyone. Klout and its algorithms have received a lot of criticism questioning how accurate its measures really are, leading many people to opt out of the service.

Others swear by the service. They believe Klout is a true measure of influence and can tell a lot about how effective your social media strategy really is. Some employers have even started asking candidates for their Klout score!

Klout not only measures how influential you are, but it also measures what you are most influential about. In ConvoSpark’s case, we are most influential about Facebook Applications and Social Media.

So the big question remains. Is Klout worth it? While Klout is a great guide to testing your online influence, it is important to note that since Klout will not reveal its exact algorithms, there is no guarantee of how accurate your score is. Don’t let that stop you from checking it out, though. It may be just the right amount of guidance you need to make your social media strategy more effective.

What’s your stand on Klout?
