5 Ways to Use a Hashtag You Probably Hadn’t Thought Of

If you’re on Twitter, you’re probably familiar with the concept of hashtags. But are you using them to their full potential? Here are 5 ways to use hashtags that you may not have thought of before courtesy of our Facebook app company.

1) Twitter Chats:

Twitter chats are becoming HUGE and are hosted on a variety of topics. Hundreds of people may participate in them discussing everything from TV shows to blogging to marketing. Just add the assigned hashtag to anything you’d like to contribute to the conversation. It’s a great way to connect with people with similar interests and gain followers. Check out this list of Twitter chats already in existence if you’d like to participate or start one of your own!

2) Track discussions on a specific topic:

Even if there’s not a formal discussion happening there are always people talking. So if you’re looking for information or people to follow on a certain topic just search for the related hashtag. Switch up your search term a little bit to get maximum results. For example if you’re looking for information on blogging, try searching for #blogging, #blogs, or #bloggers.

3) Make New Friends:

As we mentioned above, hashtags make it easy to connect with people with similar interests. Looking for other social media professionals? Try searching for #socialmedia, #SM or #socialnetworking. Find the people most interesting to you and follow them! They just might follow you back!

4) Events:

Attending a conference? Using hashtags is a great way to find other people at the event and keep others updated on what you’re doing there. Can’t attend? Follow the hashtag and see what people are saying about. Hashtags also work great for sports and TV events. You can find people live tweeting about a football game if you’re not around to watch it. Or join in on a discussion about the #emmys.

5) Follow breaking news stories:

Hashtags can be used to stay updated on important and breaking news. With potentially millions of people tweeting information as soon as it’s released you’ll always be in the loop. You will hear things as soon as they happen.
